Hillsborough
County limits the movement of "thru-trucks" to designated routes. Single unit trucks
with three or more axles and non-passenger combination vehicles must travel on designated truck
routes between their origin and destination to the extent possible and must enter and exit Hillsborough
County on a designated truck route.
History
On October 2, 2002, the Board of County Commissioners decided to re-examine the Hillsborough
County Truck Route Plan to see if recent changes in the county-such as growth or residential
areas around truck routes-warrant changes to the plan.
Technical Committee
On February 10, 2004, the BOCC decided to delay updating the Truck Route Plan to allow more time
for additional technical analysis and community meetings. A Truck Route Plan Technical Committee
was formed which includes representatives from various governmental agencies such as the Sheriff's
Office, City of Tampa, and the Environmental Protection Commission, as well as representatives
from the various Hillsborough County departments. The purpose of the committee was to define
current problems, establish founding principles and goals, then agree on methodology, assumptions
and a schedule. To date, the committee has held several meetings to collect and analyze technical
data and has approved numerous recommendations.
Public Meetings
The committee's recommendations were presented to the public at a series of public meetings held
in Keystone / Lutz / Carrollwood, Ruskin, Brandon, Town 'N Country / Westchase, Plant City,
and Sun City Center. At the public meetings, citizens were given the opportunity to comment
on the recommendations before a final report will be presented to the BOCC at a public hearing
in January 2005.
