Athletic Services provides a youth
basketball program for boys and girls in grades 1-10
and the Leaguerett Softball program, a slow pitch program
for girls ages 5-17. It also operates an adult slow
pitch softball program for more than 200 teams including
an over 60 “senior” league. For these programs,
umpires and referees are recruited and trained by the
umpire-in-chief and the senior umpire staff. There are
currently more than 100 umpires and referees on staff.
Athletic Services works with the recreation section
in programming Track and Field meets and assists with
organizing the athletic leagues for the teen program.
Most youth sports leagues in the
County (and neighboring cities) are independently organized
separate of the recreation department but operate as
non-profit associations on County (or City) property.
The County provides assistance, maintenance, equipment,
and education to the leagues, their boards, coaches,
parents and players. Each league has its own set of
by-laws and policies to govern its program (under County
guidance) and they set their own fees for registration.
The listings below will link you to other municipalities
where these independent associations operate. (Included
with the Hillsborough County facilities are those in
the cities of Tampa, Temple Terrace, Plant City, and
Oldsmar.) Athletic Services is responsible
for conducting criminal background checks on youth sports
volunteers and certifying (or re-certifying) youth sports
coaches. Since the inception of the coaching certification
program, more than 14,000 coaches have been certified.
Coaching
are conducted monthly.
Field and court lighting on all Parks, Recreation and
Conservation facilities is also the responsibility of
Athletic Services. If you notice lights on when they shouldn’t
be or lights that don’t come on when they should,
please report these problems to the Athletic Office.
