Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
1. In a small nonstick saucepan, heat the sugar over
medium heat. Stir continuously until it is dissolved
and begins to brown. Lift the pan over the heat source
(4-6 inches) and continue to heat the sugar until it
becomes golden brown. Pour caramelized sugar into the
bundt pan and swirl to coat the bottom and sides of
the pan evenly. This should be done quickly; as the
sugar cools it will harden.
2. Prepare yellow cake as indicated on the box. Pour
approximately 3/4 of the cake mix into the sugar/caramel
coated bundt pan. Bundt pan should be half full. Discard
remaining cake batter or bake in separate pan.
3. Flan mix: In a blender, combine condensed milk,
evaporated milk, whole milk, eggs and vanilla. (Optional
- add two to three tablespoons of sugar for added sweetness.)
Blend on high for one minute.
4. Pour flan mix on top of cake mix into bundt pan.
Do not stir or mix! The flan will soak through to the
bottom of pan on its own.
5. Place bundt pan onto the middle of a larger baking
pan. Pour hot water into the bottom of the larger pan
so that it is about 1 - 2 inches full of water.
6. Place in preheated oven for one hour ten minutes
or until set. Start checking dessert at one hour mark
by inserting a toothpick through the center.
7. Chill dessert in refrigerator for at least one hour,
then turn over onto a plate. Pour melted sugar over
cake and serve.
