Program Initiatives
 
 
  • LET ME PLAY HEAD START - HILLSBOROUGH County Head Start Program was selected as a 2008-2009 Let Me Play Head Start training program. The Let Me Play Head Start initiative is a partnership with NikeGO (Nike’s signature US Community Affairs initiative), The SPARK Programs (Sports, Play, and Active Recreation for Kids) and the National Head Start Association. The goal is to encourage participating Head Start staff and parents to integrate developmentally appropriate physical activities into their child’s day.

  • In September 2007, the program received a $1.1 million dollar Head Start Healthy Marriage Initiative Project Grant. This five year grant strengthens family formation amongst singles, engaged couples as well as married couples.

  • Hillsborough County CDBG funding was awarded to the program in October 2007 to fund $162,000 of facilities projects and $94,000 of playground improvement projects, playground improvement projects. The second phase of this funding extends through September 30, 2009.

  • In January 2008, the March of Dimes awarded the program over $9,000 to implement a Women’s Reproductive Health Project with the mothers of enrolled children. The January 2009 award is estimated at $9,979.

  • In July 2008, the program was approved to provide Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten Services (VPK) at 16 of its 22 sites. Over 300 children will be served through VPK in 2008-2009. This is expected to generate approximately $691,000 in revenues; this will help provide additional funding and services to low income children.

  • The women’s involvement project renamed themselves “LILIES”, standing for Ladies Interested in Life, Involvement, Education, and Self Motivation. Topics covered in the past year included money management and how to start your own business.

  • Additional grants HS received included:
    • $4,000 - First Book Grant Community Development Block Grant - $85,000
    • Tylenol - $500 for butterfly garden at North Tampa
    • School Readiness State Program - $89,000

  • In September 2008, the program received a Head Start Innovation and Improvement Project grant, for a period of 3 years, in the amount of $215,000 per year.  It will be used to implement sustainable gardens to heighten the focus of math and science development for the children.  In addition to using gardening for the children’s development, the project will produce deliverables in the form of a tool kit to share math and science curricula as well as professional development strategies with other Head Start programs across the nation.
