Procedures for Hazardous Materials Spill

A hazardous materials accident can occur anywhere. One of the largest potential threat areas in west central Florida is the Port of Tampa which stores and handles large quantities of hazardous materials on a daily basis. The Port of Tampa has four warning sirens in the event of an accidental hazardous materials release. The sirens are located at Davis Island Fire Station, Hooker's Point, Palmetto Beach Fire Station and Port Sutton. The sirens are tested every six months.

In the unlikely event of a hazardous materials release in the Port of Tampa, the warning sirens can be activated from any of the facilities in the Port area that handles potentially hazardous materials.

IF THE WARNING SIREN IS HEARD:

  • If possible, move away from the accident scene and help keep others away
  • Do not walk into or touch any of the spilled substance.
  • Try not to inhale gases, fumes or smoke. If possible, cover mouth with a cloth while leaving the area.

IF ASKED TO STAY INDOORS ("IN-PLACE SHELTERING"):

  • Seal house or facility so contaminants cannot enter.
  • Close and lock doors and windows.
  • Seal gaps under doorways and windows with wet towels and duct tape.
  • Seal gaps around window and air conditioning units, exhaust fans and any ventilation systems, which takes in air from the outside.
  • Bring pets inside.
  • If gas or vapors could have entered the building, take shallow breaths through a cloth or a towel
  • Avoid eating or drinking any food or water that may be contaminated.
  • Monitor the radio and television for further updates and remain in shelter until Hillsborough County Emergency Management personnel indicate it is safe to come out.

IF ASKED TO EVACUATE:

  • Stay tuned to a radio or television for information on evacuation routes, temporary shelters, and procedures.
  • Follow the routes recommended by Hillsborough County Emergency Management - shortcuts may not be safe. Leave at once.

AFTER:

  • Return home only when Hillsborough County authorities say it is safe.
  • Follow local instructions concerning the safety of food and water.
