The past two hurricane seasons have been quiet - thankfully - but we cannot take for granted that this year will be the same. While Philip J. Klotzbach and William M. Gray have predicted 15 named storms, 8 hurricanes, and 4 major storms during this season, no one can predict if any storm will directly impact our community.

That’s why your County’s Emergency Management team works year round to ensure we are ready to respond to hurricanes or any other type of disaster.  And we want all County residents to be prepared – Know your Evacuation Zone, Have a Plan, and Know Your Plan.

Here are some reminders on ways to keep your family, pets and belongings safe:

  • Start now to prepare your hurricane survival kit for you, your family and your pets, with food, water, medicine and batteries. Be sure to secure important documents in waterproof bags or containers.
  • Preregister special needs or elderly residents that need assistance for a Special Needs Shelter. Early registration allows emergency officials to quickly identify and check on those that need medical attention. Special Needs applications are available by calling Hillsborough County's Infoline at (813) 272-5900 or the Hillsborough County Health Department (813) 307-8015 x6006.
  • Make sure you know your evacuation zone and where you're going to go if an evacuation is ordered.
  • Make sure you keep up with weather developments and official instructions as storms form so you have plenty of time to secure your home, boat, livestock/pets and family.
  • Don't forget to have a plan for your business as well.
More hurricane preparedness information can be found in the 2008 Hurricane Guide, the official guide for Tampa Bay, which is available at post offices. You can pick up bulk copies for your neighborhood associations or organizations by calling the County's Emergency Operations Center.
